Bench Talk - An Open Lab Forum

Course Chair:  Klaus E. Wiemer, PhD

NEEDS ASSESSMENT

Laboratory staff needs an open forum in which to discuss pertinent topics that can affect their day to day work. Traditional meetings are often not the proper forum to discuss these topics with their peers or recognized experts in their field. Thos forum will allow such an exchange of thoughts and ideas.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

This course is designed to provide the participant with the information to:

  1. Identify different methods used to ensure high levels of quality control in the IVF laboratory.
  2. Recognize morphological criteria that might be indicative of embryos with high implantation potential.
  3. Become familiar with the use of CGH as a possible biomarker embryo selection.
COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course will be an open forum allowing embryologists and laboratory staff to interact with peers and recognized experts in their field.  Initially, each expert will present a short lecture on one of the following topics.

  1. QC/QA in the IVF Lab: What are the best benchmarks to ensure good embryo development and outcomes?
  2. How to select embryos for replacement: Should I transfer on Day 3 or Day 5?
  3. CGH from single cells and possible correlations to biomarkers identified in culture media from single embryos.

After each lecture, the speaker will engage the members of the audience in a discussion on the topic presented to share their thoughts. The intention is create a small group atmosphere, with some initial comments by the speakers, encouraging participants to open up and share their experiences with their peers. Our goal is to come to a consensus on each topic before moving on to the next.
