VITRIFICATION WORKSHOP

Course Chairs:  James Stachecki,  PhD & Klaus E. Wiemer, PhD

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Vitrification is an ultra rapid method of freezing oocytes and embryos using high concentrations of permeable and non- permeable cryoprotectants over a very short exposure time period. These gametes are rapidly cooled using liquid nitrogen vapor, liquid, or liquid nitrogen slush.

This method is beginning to gain popularity in the clinical IVF laboratory due to high initial survival and success rates reported in the literature. This method is also an attractive alternative to slow cooling because expensive programmable freezers are not required.

This workshop will demonstrate two methods of vitrification for the participants.  In addition, participants will have the opportunity to practice these techniques.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Following the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the principals of vitrification.
  • Compare and contrast different vitrification methodologies.
  • Practice the actual techniques as they pertain to vitrification.
