Essentials for having a properly designed IVF Lab

Klaus Wiemer, PhD and Antonia Gilligan, BS

NEEDS ASSESSMENT

In this presentation, we will discuss the how modern IVF laboratories should be designed with special consideration given to air filtration, lab flow and environmental contamination.

LECTURE OBJECTIVES

Following this presentation, the participants should:

  • Understand which environmental toxins can affect embryonic development.
  • How air entering the lab should be filtered.
  • The importance of good lab design in terms of work flow.
LECTURE DESCRIPTION

In vitro fertilization is becoming the treatment of choice for many infertile couples hoping to have a child.  However, this treatment means that gametes must be maintained outside the body for a considerable length of time. Originally, the IVF laboratory was not designed to culture gametes outside the body and no thought was given to what effect the environment might have on developing embryos resulting from IVF.
