TESE: The Laboratory Perspective

Mitch Schiewe, PhD

NEEDS ASSESSMENT/DESCRIPTION

The ability to handle testicular tissue for IVF/ICSI is critical for the success of the lab and the individual programs.  Identifying sperm is only one of the critical aspects of the labs role.  The ability to extract sperm from the tissue is essential.  Realizing that not all viable testicular sperm is motile is something that many labs have trouble accepting.

In addition there have also been advances in media and culture.  Can sperm be induced to mature in vitro?  When is the best time to freeze testicular sperm?  These and other questions are important to everyone involved.

LECTURE OBJECTIVES

At the end of this presentation, the participant will be able to:

  • Identify what sperm are viable and which can be injected.
  • Determine which media is ideal for which situation.
  • Recall crucial tricks of the trade for micromanipulation of testicular sperm.
