Aromatase Inhibitors: What They Add for Assisted Reproduction

Mohamed F. Mitwally, MD, HCLD

NEEDS ASSESSMENT/LECTURE

Aromatase inhibitors (AI) have been found successful for ovarian stimulation. Preliminary data suggest a potential role in enhancing outcome of assisted reproduction (ART) by improving response to gonadotropin stimulation in poor responders.

Other theoretical benefits include reducing risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome and enhancing implantation.

The short half-life of AI and absence of active metabolites with recent reports on healthy babies born after using AI for infertility treatment confirm their safety.

LECTURE OBJECTIVES

At the end of this presentation, participants should :

1.  Be familiar with theory behind using AI for ovarian stimulation

2.  Be able to Identify potential role of AI in ART including:

-Poor responders-Hyper-responders

-Specific types of infertility e.g. endometriosis & cancer patients

3.  Appreciate safety issues concerning AI
