NEEDS ASSESSMENT

There is a fundamental process within TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) referred to as the ‘differential’ diagnosis. This diagnosis evaluates the underlying relationships between all the systems of the physiology, in particular evaluating their fluency of communication and delivery. This is often phrased as pattern and syndrome differentiation, and offers a very specific understanding of the signs and symptoms that may arise.

This aspect of diagnosis is not a part of the Western (Orthodox) evaluation process. For many patients the addition of the Chinese diagnosis can offer valuable understanding of what is particular and unique to their physiology and TCM treatment can engender significant improvement to the underlying condition.

In fertility we see that the integration of TCM diagnosis and treatment can greatly enhance the physician’s understanding of the particular physiology of each patient, and that this differential diagnosis can help to inform the drug and protocol regime that may be chosen for that individual.

LECTURE DESCRIPTION

This lecture is designed to exemplify the potential that utilizing integrated practice brings to the individual patient, and to highlight the advantages that the integration of TCM can bring to the fertility unit.

Jani White brings a European perspective to this conference with a discussion of the structure and politics within UK Fertility medicine, and the significant and growing impact this is having on the development of integrated practice within UK Fertility and Hospital units.

This discussion centers on OHSS (Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome) and RAB (Recurrent Abortions), and uses case history to exemplify not only the treatment plan, benefit to patient, and the outcomes, but also shows the consultation process between the Fertility Consultant (RE) and the TCM practitioner and the advantages gained through an integration of practice.
